07/11/2005: "Filmmaker Cyrus Carr gets detained without due process."

Just found out today that an old work colleague Cyrus Carr has been jailed in Iraq without due process. I met Cyrus around 1995 at a tech job in Silicon Valley. He worked as a sales manager. I worked in engineering. I didn’t know Cyrus that long, (perhaps less than 1 year) but spoke with him many times and remember him very well –

I remember him as being a entrepreneurial type of guy. He admired great marketing achievements and ideas. For example the company name Earthlink. He had an EarthLink account. I remember him saying – Isn’t that just the perfect ISP name!? What a great idea! Earthlink! Just that about it! It’s perfect!

Cyrus was a vegetarian; I asked him what made him want to not eat meat. He told me about a negative experience he has when he was a child – he saw an animal get slaughtered, after that event he decided not to eat meat again.

Cyrus felt strongly that the company we were working at was going in the wrong sales direction. I remember this very well. He believed the key to our success at that time was to focus on making deals with resellers, while the company’s executive management wanted to deal with customers directly. He thought this was lunacy.

Cyrus believed in my talents. At that time I was working in engineering support dealing mainly with documentation control. Cyrus saw that I loved computers and was impressed with my skills. I remember him telling me that I should move into the computer field. He said that if he were running the company he would put me in charge of the IT dept. It really made me feel good knowing that he believed in me and my talents that much.


It’s been about 10 years since I spoke with Cyrus. He and I have both become aspiring filmmakers. I hope I get the opportunity see him again in the future. I would never have imagined him becoming a film maker. Nor would I ever have imagined him being put into custody by our own government without formal charges! They better let him go soon!!
